Nixon, Director ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRESS RELEASE – Dump Truck Overturned on Ocean Highway FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Julie M. Solesbee September 14, 2021 Phone: 252-426-5646 On Monday, September 13, 2021, at 6:38 pm, the Perquimans County 911 Center received a call for an overturned dump truck at the intersection of Ocean Highway and Wiggins Road. When crews arrived on scene, they found a dump truck transporting a load of soybeans lying on its side. The driver of the vehicle was able to self-extricate and was not complaining of any injuries. Over the next two hours, Winfall firefighters and a local farmer used shovels and a front- end loader to remove the soybeans from the roadway. The Sheriff’s Office and NC State Highway Patrol provided traffic control as one lane of Ocean Highway South was closed, and traffic had to be diverted down Lake Road. Due to the extended scene time, EMS remained on scene and provided rehabilitation for the crews. Those responding to the incident included Winfall Fire Department, the Perquimans County Sheriff’s Office, Perquimans County EMS, the NC State Highway Patrol, and local farmers. Winfall Lieutenant, Anthony McLawhorn, provided Incident Command per established National Incident Management System (NIMS) guidelines. Winfall Fire Chief Corey Stallings stated “I would like to thank the responders and local farmers that came together to help with this incident. Due to the teamwork provided, we were able to salvage approximately 98% of the beans involved in the spill.” This incident is under investigation by the NC State Highway Patrol.
